Appearance of the Deglet Date Palm

Height and Trunk

These palms have a moderate growth rate and grow similar to other breeds of palms. Their growth rates are typically 12-18 inches per year and in nurseries, some palms can grow up to 3 feet each year. The date palm can live to the age of about 200 years, and they can eventually reach heights of more than 120 feet tall, but heights of 60 to 80 feet (18-24 meters) are more common.

Deglet Date Palm trunks are thick, solitary, and clumping. The trunk grows as a tall independent stalk with an average caliper of 18-20 inches. The trunk is typically given a “diamond cut” that gives it a beautiful look without damaging the palm.

Canopy and Fronds

The canopy will spread to approximately 25 feet after the initial establishment period. These silvery, blue-green fronds can grow up to 15’ long, and 2’ wide, making the diameter of the spread of the largest palms 30 feet.

Although its crown is wide, it is not very dense, and therefore the date palm does not function well as a shade tree. Despite its sparse appearance, this plant is attractive to bees, butterflies, and birds. The leaflets are categorized as evergreen monocots, meaning that they are green all year.

Ideal Growth Conditions and Maintenance

Deglet Date Palms prefer full sun, and the palm is very heat tolerant, handling temperatures over 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The date palm is slightly drought tolerant, but not as much as the Washingtonia species or other Phoenix species.

They can survive long periods without watering once established. They are fire retardant and can handle cold snaps as low as 15 degrees. The date palm is truly a very tolerant plant that can survive most conditions, but too much rain can hurt the palm.

Date palms require well-drained deep sandy loam soils with pH 6.6-7.5 (neutral) and do not like acidic soils. They need a medium amount of water and well-draining soil to thrive, with a substantial irrigation program to produce good fruit.

Date palms are very popular due to their striking regal appearance, their natural beauty, and because of their easy maintenance. We recommend trimming the date palm once a year around the end of May. This will give your tree its yearly maintenance and make sure the palm doesn’t grow unwanted fruit that will drop to the floor.

Bearing Fruit

There are male and female date palm trees, although only females bear fruit. Depending on climate and cultivation practices, a mature Deglet Noor can produce 200-300 pounds of fruit per year. The palm needs heat to pollinate and ripen its fruit. Male date palms are often used in landscapes rather than females because once they mature, they do not yield the annual crop of dates (which can sometimes attract pests).
